A tour at 222 East 34th Street is short if you arrive without tools. You do not need a broker. You do need a tape measure, the floor plan for the unit you will walk, and a list of questions you will not remember in the hallway.

Paper and tools
Bring a government ID. Bring the listing and the PDF plan on your phone, downloaded, because elevator reception is a poor place to reload a file. Bring a 25-foot tape. Photograph the walls you care about, including closet interiors and the kitchen run. A note on your phone that says "big enough" is how people buy the wrong sofa.
If you already own furniture, bring the dimensions, not a photo of the couch in a different room. Width and depth beat a memory of how it looked on 12th Street.
Questions that belong on the tour
Is this the residence whose number will be on the lease, or a model? What is the available date? Does this line have in-unit laundry, or is it the 5th-floor room? Is there a private terrace, or only the shared roof deck? Which way does it face? You can ask all of that in ten minutes if it is written down.
Do not use the tour to negotiate a rent that is not on the listing. Some residences are marked rented with no price. That is not a prompt to invent one. Ask what is actually available this week.
After you walk out
Stand on 34th Street and rank the unit against the other plan you saw, while the light is still in your head. If you want a second look, schedule it rather than relying on the photos. Filter current listings first so you are not touring a unit that has already moved. Call (212) 684-3222.
