A guest sleeps over. An occupant lives here. The lease, the front desk, and New York roommate law treat those as different people. If someone has a drawer, a fob, and mail in the package room, they are not a guest, and you should not pretend otherwise at the desk.

Guests
Overnight guests are normal in a rental. This site does not publish a night cap or a guest-registration rule. Ask the concierge what the building expects if a visitor needs a fob or will be here while you are at work. Do not leave a guest arguing with the desk at midnight because you never asked.
Short-term rentals of the whole apartment are a different problem. You cannot run an unhosted listing out of a Class A lease here. A friend on the couch is not an Airbnb. Do not blur them to make a weekend guest sound official, or an unofficial sublet sound like a guest.
Occupants
Someone who lives in the apartment belongs in the building's records. Real Property Law 235-f and your lease are the starting point. Notice of the name, fobs, and whether they should be added to the lease are office questions, not hallway questions. A person who is "just crashing" for two months is an occupant in practice.
The front desk is not trying to police your social life. It is trying to know who is in a 480-unit building at 2 a.m. Help them. That is how packages, lockouts, and fire-safety lists work.
Get the category right
If you are touring because a second person is moving in, shop a plan that fits two people and ask how to add a name. Filter listings or schedule a tour. Call (212) 684-3222.
