A floor-through apartment runs from the front of the building to the back, with windows on opposite sides, instead of sitting on one exposure like most tower units. In a Manhattan rental that usually means light at both ends and a layout you can walk through without a long interior hall.

What it looks like here

Residence 1530, on the 15th floor, and Residence 1615, on the 16th floor, are both 806-square-foot floor-through one-bedrooms. Each has north and south exposures, a pass-through U-shaped kitchen, an in-unit washer and dryer, and two walk-in closets. The living room is about 19 feet 7 inches by 12 feet. The bedroom is about 16 feet 6 inches by 11 feet 1 inch.

Line 30 is the mirror-image layout of line 15. The rooms are the same size. The kitchen and the closets swap sides. If you tour one and the other is the apartment that is actually available, you are looking at the same plan flipped, not a different apartment with the same square footage.

Why the label matters

Square footage does not tell you this. An 800-square-foot one-bedroom on a single exposure can be a living room, a galley, and a bedroom stacked along one window wall. A floor-through of the same size has windows at both ends, which is a different kind of day: morning light in one room, afternoon light in the other, and a cross-breeze when both sides are open.

It also changes furniture. A 12-foot-wide living room will not take a sectional that a wider room would. Measure the plan before you buy a sofa. The dimensions above are in the listing, which is the right place to start, and a tape measure on the tour is the right way to finish.

What it does not mean

"Floor-through" is not a legal category and it is not a promise of a private entrance or a townhouse. These are apartments in a 480-unit elevator building. They share the lobby, the package room, and the elevators with everyone else. The difference is the line, not the building type.

See Residence 1530 and Residence 1615, or schedule a tour and ask to walk the line that is actually available. The leasing desk is (212) 684-3222.

The Neighborhood

Murray Hill, Manhattan

Nestled between Midtown and Gramercy, Murray Hill is one of Manhattan's most enviably located neighborhoods — a residential sanctuary steps from the city's greatest landmarks, transportation hubs, and cultural institutions.

Positioned at the center of it all, residents of The Anthem enjoy unparalleled access to Grand Central Terminal (10 minutes on foot), the Empire State Building (visible from nearly every window), and the waterfront promenade along the East River. The neighborhood's tree-lined streets and boutique dining scene provide a calm contrast to the energy of Midtown just blocks away.

Murray Hill's central latitude makes every corner of New York City accessible in minutes — Downtown, Uptown, Brooklyn, Queens, and New Jersey are all within easy reach via subway, bus, and ferry.
